Emates | 2021

Images from series Emates" (2015-2021) portray warmly-glowing hyper-sexualised women’s bodies. Originally culled from online pornography websites, these pornographic images are altered by radically blurring the backgrounds (and other portions of the composition), whilst tightly focusing on the sexed, and sexualised, body parts (e.g., lips, breasts, and nipples). These modifications highlight, distort, and problematise the stereotypical pornographic imagery found in the original photographs. Despite their substantial erasure and dematerialisation, however, the visual recognisability of flamboyant, almost burlesque, performativity of sex and gender in pornographiic industry is left intact.
